A Few Nice Trout From The Rondout Creek

One evening after work this past week I fished the Rondout creek along Berme Road in Wawarsing. I put my centerpin on a small stream rod so I could maneuver it through the thick brush and over hanging trees a little easier. I fished a slow and shallow hole about 60 yrds long that would almost be impossible to traditionally bounce a worm through with a spinning reel.  I started out with small garden worms and adjusted my float to about 30 inches above my bait and drifted down through the hole. Every couple drifts I either had a hit or caught a fish. They were nothing big, but just about every fish was a nice brown with the exception of a few creek chubs. After about 30 minutes or so I changed bait and started fishing with melee worms and had awesome results “non stop action.” I would have to say that the melees seem to produce better results. About a half hour before dark the fish just shut off and wouldn’t hit anything unless it was on the surface or part of the hatch that was taking place. This was one time I wish I had a fly rod.  All in all after about an hour and a half I ended up with about a dozen small browns 8-14 inches. I would encourage anyone to give this section of the Rondout a try especially you fly guys.

If you’re interested in fishing this section of the Rondout take Berme Rd. south off route 44/55 in Kerhonkson. The Rondout runs parallel to this road for the next few miles or so all the way to Ellenville with many nice holes that are not overly fished.  I would recommend very early in the morning or late in the evening Make sure to bring bug spray as the mosquitoes are huge and relentless.

Ron Lambertson is an avid fisherman here in Ulster county and throughout the summer will be sharing  some of his methods, locations and results with other local sportsmen.

Ron nice article i went there the other day not sure if it was the same stretch but had good results alot of fish no real size but very fun and the bug hatches are sick it makes me wonder if there are some whopper hold over fish in that stream have been stocking it for along time with only pressure at the easy access spots bridges roadways etc. To get into some good fish you will have to travel on foot up or down away from the easy access spots.
