Think You Can’t Arrow A Gobbler…Think Again
Archers and turkey hunters when you put your shotgun sights on a wise old gobbler and pull the trigger do you ever wonder if you could have taken him with your bow? If you have but didn’t think you could I want to tell you that if I can do it you can too.
Hunting turkeys with bow and arrow obviously requires different equipment compared to hunting with shotgun but also requires some different tactics to bring a gobbler in close for a clean ethical kill. Putting an arrow through turkey’s vitals is like hitting softball inside a medicine ball, not an easy task. If you are looking for something to hone your archery skills than you have to give this a try. You will find yourself spending more time in the woods and hunting harder but when it all comes together and you have a bird on the ground you will be hooked and will not want to hunt turkeys any other way.
In upcoming articles I will share with you the equipment and tactics needed to help you bow bag your bird. Even if you’re a seasoned veteran at this challenging sport I might give you one more tactic to add to your arsenal. Stay tuned and I will cover setup, blinds, decoys, broadheads and the toughest of all shot placement.

After getting several nice turkeys with the shot gun, I really want to get a bird with the bow. The thing that is holding me back is having the image of the bird taking flight with the arrow stuck in him. I guess you run the same risk as when hunting deer it just seems different for some reason. I was thinking of maybe picking up a 3d turkey target similar to the deer target I use for practice.
lou don’t let the bird flying off with the arrow hold you back.head shots are an alternative to body shots which i will write about in part III under shot placement.
Thanks Steve. Looking forward to it.
Lou, I’ve taken about 15 birds with the bow and never had one fly off. It’s a lot of fun, shot placement is important and taking 10 yd shots helps……… : )
